About the Stamp River and Somass River

The Stamp River located in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island has the most consistent Salmon and Steelhead fishery in the province of British Columbia. The average return or Chinook to the Stamp River is about 30 thousand and about the same for Coho.

Sockeye, Coho and Steelhead have a very similar life cycle with all three spending one year in the freshwater before heading out to sea for two to four years. This years Sockeye run should correlate into a very good Steelhead return this fall and winter. Steelhead in the Port Alberni area can be caught in decent numbers from October 15th to April 1.

The Stamp River can be divided into three sections: Upper (above Stamp Falls), middle (above the bucket) and lower (below the bucket). Starting September 15th bait may be used in the lower river, which is the bucket down. Bait may not be used above the bucket, which includes the middle and the upper part as described above.

Below are  the regulations that pertain to Steelhead and salmon in the Stamp River, Sproat River and Somass River.
